Advent 1 - Tuesday
By Pat Lee | December 4, 2007
Tuesday December 4
Luke 10:21-24 At that time Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit, said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this was your good pleasure. All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows who the Son is except the Father, and no one knows who the Father is except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.”
Then he turned to his disciples and said privately, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see. For I tell you that many prophets and kings wanted to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.”
As children many of us (of a “certain” age) learned to sing the chorus “Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so.” We believed that Jesus loved us, but notbecause the Bible told me so. We learned the chorus long before we could read the Bible. We believed it because our parents and/or our grandparents and/or our Sunday School teachers told us so. No theological degrees were necessary for them or for us. They were willing to share the good news of God’s love–we were open to accepting it.
Sometimes we can speak of God’s love without speaking - through our smiles, our simple acts of kindness, our prayers. People still find their way to belief in God’s love through the loving words and actions of “ordinary” people like you and me.
For that–in this Advent–we are grateful. In Advent we can try to remember that we have been given so many things from God. Our lives, our family, our faith in Jesus, and so much more. Advent is a time for giving thanks to what we have right now.
Prayer: Father in heaven, we wish to thank you for all that you have given us as we await the fullness of Your Kingdom. As we look with anticipation to the celebration of Christmas, help us to remember that we have already received the most wonderful gift of all, Your Son, Jesus.
